A Game of Thrones: Genesis

A Game of Thrones: Genesis is a strategy video game developed by Cyanide. The game is an adaptation of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin and is the first such video game adaptation. A Game of Thrones: Genesis was published by Focus Home Interactive on PC. The game was released on September 29, 2011.
The game takes place over 1,000 years of the fictional history of Westeros, beginning with the arrival of the Rhoynar led by the warrior-queen Nymeria.

Gameplay

Gameplay focuses on capturing nodes -- castles, towns, and goldmines -- with characters. Emphasis is placed on the rock-paper-scissors mechanics of "underhanded" characters rather than the brute force combat strength of traditional realtime strategy games. The goal of the game is to win the Iron Throne and doing so can be done by amassing enough 'prestige' within the game. Each house will have special units and abilities. House Stark will have direwolves, and House Baratheon will have better archers for example.
The game has two modes of play: Versus and Campaign. The game will feature four main facets: diplomacy, military, economic, and underhand.

Reception

Genesis received mixed reviews on Metacritic, receiving a 53 out of 100.Gameinformer praised its innovative style but shunned its lack of tactical combat and execution.

James Cameron's Avatar: The Game

James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is a 2009 third-person action video game prequel to James Cameron's film of the same name. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and released on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii and Nintendo DS on December 1, 2009, with a PSP version released later on December 8, 2009.It was announced by Ubisoft that it would be using the same technology as the film to be displayed in stereoscopic 3D. In a Nintendo Power interview, it was stated that the Wii version will use Ubisoft's Jade engine. As of May 19, 2010, the game has sold nearly 2.7 million copies.
A significant feature has Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi reprising their roles from the film.

Story

Set in 2152 (two years before the events of the film), Avatar: The Game starts out with a new signals specialist arriving named Able Ryder, whose first mission is to save five marines from Viperwolves. After saving the marines, Ryder must go help another Sig Spec who is afraid of the Viperwolves. Then Ryder gets on a boat to another base, where Ryder is told to go fix the fences. After fixing the fences, Ryder gets told to get in his avatar. Ryder's first mission in his avatar body is to get cell samples. After getting the samples, a Na'vi tells Ryder to kill his infected animals. Ryder finds out that there is a mole and that it is one of the avatar drivers. He must then follow a Na'vi who will lead him to the mole. After finding who the mole is, Ryder must make a decision of siding with the Na'vi or siding with the RDA.

Gameplay

At first the player is allowed to choose the appearance of the character from a set of pre-defined faces, although not the name. After the player has chosen a side, each side the player chooses offers different gameplay, weapon set, skill set, and environment.

As a Soldier, the player is equipped with firearms such as assault rifles, shotguns, grenade launchers, and Flamethowers. The soldier generally have to eliminate the enemies, which are fast and resilient and usually charging towards the player, from afar. Playing as an Avatar limits the player to only one Avatar-issued machine gun and various primitive weapons such as bows, crossbows and melee weapons. The Avatar player usually has to charge the enemies since ranged weapon are either weak (the machine gun), have slow rate of fire (bows and crossbows), or have limited ammunition; however, the human enemies are generally weak and the basic foot soldiers can die in one hit. The environment also reacts differently to the character: many plants will attack the soldier, while the Avatar can walk past said plants unharmed. A variety of vehicles or mounts are also available to each race.

If the player's health is reduced to 0, (s)he can use a Recovery that instantly recovers to s health. Recoveries can be acquired by gathering cell samples left behind by killed creatures (including Humans or Na'vi) or plants, but only 5 Recoveries can be carried at any one time. Avatar players can collect Cell Samples more easily from many plants without having to "kill" them. If the player falls to his death, however, he cannot use Recoveries and have to reload from a check point which is automatically saved. The game offers no way to manually save when playing the game (it is only saved when player reach certain points, completed an objective, or quit the game). A special case involves a separate checkpoint when the user decides which race to side with, which cannot be overwritten.

As the player completes mission objectives or eliminates opposition, the character gains experience points and levels up. The leveling up process is quite linear, with no way to customize the character. Each level rewards the character with better version of the weapon, armor and skills she/he already has. The character can have only 1 armor, 4 skills and 4 weapons equipped into quick slot at any one time. The skills can be offensive (boost damage, summon air strikes / wild life), defensive (boost damage resistance, heal) or of general purpose (boost speed, invisibility).

Experience points is also converted to credits that is used in the Conquer minigame. It is a Risk-style strategy game in which the player captures territories from enemies. Credits are used to buy troops (which has 3 types: infantry, heavy ground unit and air unit), defenses or limited special attacks. Some territores captured reward player with passive enhancements such as damage boost, critical chance, armor, health to use in the main game, as long as they are in the player's possession. (Play Station 3 and Windows version)

Development

On July 24, 2007, it was announced that Ubisoft would be developing Avatar: The Game in conjunction with director James Cameron as he filmed Avatar. According to Cameron, "For the movie Avatar we are creating a world rich in character, detail, conflict and cultural depth. It has the raw material for a game that the more demanding gamers of today will want to get their hands on - one that is rich in visuals and ideas, and challenging in play." While Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Stephen Lang reprised their voices for their characters, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, leading roles in the film, did not. The game was developed as an adaptation of the movie of the same name, with an original storyline and similar features. The developers had carte blanche from the movie. The idea originally came from James Cameron's daughter (Mary Cameron) and she thought it would be a good idea to create a game for the movie.
On August 27, 2009, MovieScore Magazine reported that composer Chance Thomas had been hired to write the music for Avatar: The Game.It was unclear at the time whether the score would contain pieces of the original score composed by James Horner for the movie.

3D capabilities

According to Luc Duchaine, the game's senior international brand manager, the game will require an HDMI video connection, and a 120 Hz capable display in order to avail of the 3D effects. However, the following can be found on the Official Stereoscopic FAQ of the official forums: "Avatar: The Game has the option of outputting in most standard stereoscopic 3D formats used by today's “3D-enabled” screens with stereoscopic 3D." The release of the PC demo has confirmed the PC version of the game supports 3D capabilities as well.
According to Neil Schneider, executive director of the S-3D Gaming Alliance,NVIDIA has developed a proprietary method for NVIDIA'sGeForce 3D Vision that allows left and right images to be passed directly from the game engine to the PC display, in the form of quad buffers. Up until Avatar, this was a limitation criticized by the gaming industry because they were forced to use NVIDIA's stereoscopic 3D driver when they would prefer to have s control of the S-3D gaming experience. Alternate solutions like iZ3D monitors, interlaced displays, dual output projectors and 3D Checkerboard DLP do not require this enhancement because game developers have s output control.

Reception

Avatar: The Game received mixed reception. Many critics criticized the game's linear gameplay and unintuitive controls, and the Wii version received mediocre scores as well, with many reviewers citing poor camera work, frame rate and story telling, but visuals and controls were regarded comparatively well.
The PC version garnered a metascore of 59 on Metacritic, while the console versions received a 60 for the Wii, a 60 for the PlayStation 3, and a 61 for the Xbox 360 edition.
On IGN, the game received a mediocre score of 5.9 for Wii, and a passable 6.8 for other consoles. It received a 5.5 on GameSpot for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, while earning a poor 4.0 for the PSP edition.
In contrast with the mediocre reviews of most publications, according to Meant to be Seen (MTBS), the PC version fared much better with a rating of 8.2 out of 10. Its rationale was that PC stereoscopic 3D displays are readily available. "In a year or two when S-3D gaming is much more common, I really think Avatar: The Game will be a regularly cited example that demonstrates how things should be done and what the artistic potential is behind good 3D gaming," said the reviewer of MTBS.
Also, according to Gamesradar.com, the Wii version scored a 7 out of 10, saying, "You'll love that the forest world is lush and nicely realised, fun stealth-focused combat, and an overall a surprisingly decent movie tie-in." However, the site also said that, "You'll hate heaps of ugly clipping, control frustrations hamper its stealthy nature, and its repetitive goals."

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (officially abbreviated as PES 2011 and known as World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2011 in Asia) is an association football video game in the Pro Evolution Soccer series developed and published by Konami with production assistance from the Blue Sky Team. The game was announced on 9 February 2010 and was released on the PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 on 30 September 2010 in the European Union and 8 October 2010 in the United Kingdom. The versions of Wii, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable were released on 28 October 2010. The UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League are featured within the game, and for the first time in the series, UEFA Super Cup and CONMEBOL's Copa Libertadores will be sy licensed.
The first trailer was released on 4 May 2010, while an E3 trailer was released in June 2010, showing some of the new features of the game. The game also sees the return of Lionel Messi as its cover star.It is currently the last game to feature the Argentine footballer as it cover star. ITV's Jim Beglin has been implemented as new co-commentator to Jon Champion for PES 2011. A demo of PES 2011 was released for PC and PS3 on 15 September 2010. The demo allowed users to play ten minute games with four teams available: FC Barcelonaand Bayern Munich or Copa Libertadores pair Chivas de Guadalajara and SC Internacional. A video presentation was also included after each match outlining the s game's content in readiness of the game's UK launch on 8 October 2010.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 (PC)

New features

  • Total Control: PES has enhanced the 360 degree passing ratio, offering unprecedented levels of control over every pass, shot, throw-in, through-ball, and lofted through-balls. This allows users to pass the ball into space, and move their play with total freedom. Players must precisely weight their passes and second-guess the runs of their team-mates and exploit their movement. Players can apply pressure on opponents to force them off the ball.
  • Shot and Stamina Gauge: In addition to the generic power gauge, the shot and stamina metre details the player's level of fitness. Constantly sprinting will affect the player's movements and will have an adverse effect on his stats, with passes going awry and a loss of pace.
  • New Defender AI: Defenders now hold their positions naturally, no longer chasing any ball that enters their area; preferring to close down the attacker and force them into a mistake.
  • Improved Goalkeepers: Players now have more control over their goalkeeper. This greater control allows for quick roll-outs, saves, improved accuracy with goal kicks, and precision ball distribution to make quicker breaks or playing down the clock easier.
  • Animation and Player Physics: PES has reworked every element of in-game animation. These additions will become clear before even kick-off, with the players enjoying more natural movements, with more realistic acceleration and inertia. The physicality between players is also improved, which was a priority requested in PES forums. Jostling and blocking now looks much better, while there is a larger variety of convincing tackling styles. Ambient animation also adds immensely to the in-game atmosphere, as players behave realistically when off the ball, and walk and run with a variety of individual styles. PES 2011 on the PSP has commentary and the players coming onto the pitch and real stadiums instead of none on the PSP.
  • Stadium Editor: The stadium editor allows the player to create his own stadiums. One will be able to edit the stands by selecting preset built structures, seat colours, the adboards and hoardings, the turf style (similar to Pro Evolution Soccer 2008), the architecture and roofing of the stands, whether there's a running track, plain ground, or grass around the pitch. One can also select to have fencing near the seats similar to certain stadia present in Germany and other parts of the world. Once all that has been put together, the user can now choose the setting for the stadium. The user is given the option to specify a background layout, with a variety of both urban and rural backdrops. After that, there is a possibility of adding a background image, with stock items including city scenes - and a mountain range that looks similar to the one seen in the background on the PES 3 intro. With this tool it should be possible to recreate many different stadiums from all over the world with lots of variation in style. There are currently around 25 stadiums in PES 2011 (not all licensed ones). This is more than PES 2010, which had 22. There will be a total of 25 slots to create stadiums, giving a grand total of 50 possible stadiums.
  • Speed of Play: The new level of control means that PES 2011 enjoys a more considered pace of play, which varies dependent on situations. The game will burst into life as counter-attacks come into play, but players can dictate the pace via slow build up or exploiting available space to surge forward. It is harder to make long runs from midfield, and successful play will depend on making quick passes to make room.
  • Aesthetics: Facial animation has been enhanced, but the key advances are over 1,000 all-new animations which have been recreated from the ground up using over 100 hours of motion captured footage. Every aspect of player movement has been reworked, with more organic runs, turns, throw-ins, tackles, and interaction. The way players speed up and slow down is also more natural, while replays display elements of motion blur that bring the user's saved goals to vivid life.
  • Tactical and Strategy: The sheer number of options available in the PES series has established it as a remarkably flexible simulation, allowing players to stamp their playing style on each match. The PES Productions team has implemented an all new "drag and drop" mechanism that can be used in every aspect of team management, not just substitutions or formation changes. These settings are also animated to promote better understanding of the plays that have been altered. Option to predefine team play style every 15 minutes also added.
  • Feint settings: PES offers a wide range of subtle skills, feints and turns, but PES 2011 allows users to map their favourite move sequences to the right stick, making them more accessible than ever before.
  • Master League Online: Master League offers an all-new challenge, as users are invited to try their hand against other managers online.PES 2011 marks the online debut for its much-loved Master League element, with players bidding against each other for the world's best players, and attempting to build a squad that can compete with the best against online peers all over the globe.
  • Other Edit Features: PES 2011 does not feature a boot editor. Boots and balls will be added by Konami through updates like PES 2010. One is be able to create teams, stadiums, and even s leagues (for use with offline game modes such as Become a Legend, League/Cup, and Master League) with qualification structures. In addition, the user will be able to edit the league emblems too. This is all on top of the current edit mode system that is present in PES 2010.

Content

With an exclusive deal with UEFA and CONMEBOL, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League and, for the first time, theUEFA Super Cup and Copa Libertadores are sy licensed. The tournaments are integrated into the Master League mode, and for the first time in the Master League Online mode. UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Europa League, however, are only available on the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions.

  • England England: FA Premier League (all clubs have fictional team names except Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, both of which are sy licensed)

Since its introduction, it has become very popular amongst the PES community, and as a result, they are usually made into the Bundesliga or another league of one's preference by patch makers. All the teams are entirely fictional.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (also known as Winning Eleven 10 and Winning Eleven X for Xbox 360 in Japan, Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 in the United States) is one of Konami's highly successful Pro Evolution Soccer franchise. Released on 27 October 2006 for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PC platforms and following on the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable on 1 December 2006, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 is the 6th edition of the series for the PlayStation 2, 2nd for the PlayStation Portable and 4th for PC. This year features Pro Evolution Soccer 6 making its debut on the Nintendo DS and the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 version features improved graphics, but retains gameplay similar to the other console versions. The edit mode has been stripped down for the Xbox 360 release, due to time restrictions. The graphics engine on the PC does not utilise the next-gen 360 engine but will again be a direct conversion of the PlayStation 2 engine.
A Bundesliga license was supposed to be a feature of the game but Konami were forced to remove the Bundesliga license, which means the Bundesliga is not present in PES6, not even as a series of unlicensed teams, with the exception of FC Bayern Munich who were sy licensed with the omission of their shirt sponsor T-Home.

New features

International Challenge Mode

PES6 marks the first time the International Challenge Mode has been included on the PES Series. Usually this is seen on the Japanese version - Winning Eleven - where you play as Japan and take them through the qualifiers to the International Cup and then attempt to win it. On PES, however, you have the ability to choose any playable nation on the game. The user can only play the qualifiers from Europe ,Asia ,South America, and North/Central America. Although the tournament is not licensed, the qualifiers have a lot of similarities to the FIFA World Cup qualification process:
  • A cross-playoff is used between a South American team and an Oceanian team, and a North American team plays an Asian team.
  • There is the same number of qualifiers on the game from each region as there is in the real World Cup. e.g., 14 qualify from Europe.
  • The qualifiers from South America are the same - 10 teams play each other twice with the top 4 qualifying and 5th place entering the cross-playoff.
  • The qualifiers from North America are the same - 6 teams play each other twice with the top 3 qualifying and 4th place entering the cross-playoff.
Team selection can be changed before each game and the player can choose from any player with the eligible nationality.
The International Challenge mode is only available in the PlayStation 2 and PC versions of PES6. The Xbox 360 and PSP versions do not include this mode.

Leagues

Unlicensed
  • England Premier League
Licensed
  • France Ligue 1
  • Italy Serie A
  • Netherlands Eredivisie
  • Spain La Liga

Random Selection Match

Also new to PES6 is the Random Selection Match. In this mode, the user can pick up to either four clubs/nations or one region/league. Once selected, the computer picks a random selection of players from the teams or region for the player's squad. The lineup is selected automatically, although players can choose to let the computer to pick another random selection. This was not included in the Xbox 360 version, presumably because of time restrictions.

PES shop

  • Players are available as always, but there have been many more added (all unlicensed, but based on real players). It's not only retired "legendary players" that can be bought, Kerlon and Freddy Adu, who are still active, are both available.
  • Costumes can be bought. The Ostrich and Raptor costumes have the players riding them. The Penguin costume has the player in a penguin suit. When riding the raptors, they shoot, header, control, pass and do all the hard work, but their shooting ability is much less than a normal player.
  • Gameplay frames, new hairstyles, new goal celebrations, and new stadiums are other new features available in the PES Shop.
  • The PES Shop is present on all versions of the game, with the exception of the Xbox 360 version

Network

Groups have been introduced on the PES Network. A player can join/create a group that can gain points by playing together. Groups can play each other in rival matches. If a player creates a group, they manage who's in and who's out, the team name, and who else can allow others to join and matches. A player can join a group by applying to join or accepting an invitation from another player. If the leader accepts, they are in the group. Only ten are allowed in one group at first, but there can potentially be 30 in a group at one time. Groups can reach levels with the highest level to progress to is Level 14. When you achieve higher levels, you will unlock different costumes (penguin, dinosaur, and ostrich) and classic national teams. Also, you can achieve extra member spaces in your group when you go up in level.
The Network capabilities have since been relinquished.

Platform differences

It should be noted that though the Xbox 360 version lacks dressing, it is the only version with a sy analogue Manual Pass feature, as well as much more sophisticated ball physics compared to the PS2 version and can therefore be argued to be the ultimate version in terms of gameplay as well as an online community that continues to have matches available all of the time. Even to this very day several years after the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and onwards, marking the point where the series underwent significant changes to the gameplay that remain in the series to this day.

Critical response

In 2006, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 got a perfect 10/10 score in the Official PlayStation 2 Magazine UK, which beat FIFA 07 (9/10 in the same magazine). However, the PSP version of the game ranked beneath the FIFA 07 PSP version due to slow loading times and an incomplete editor. Hyper's Eliot Fish commends the game for its "tighter dribbling [and] refined Master League" but criticises it for its commentary.

Notes

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 marks the last in a sequence for the Pro Evolution Soccer and even International Superstar Soccer series. Although the series started earlier, upon release on the Playstation console, International Superstar Soccer Pro, a version of the game was produced that began to slowly evolve with each annual revision within the series. Starting in 1997, and spanning 10 years, each game in the series (which was at the time widely considered to be light years ahead of FIFA's efforts) was piece by piece becoming more tight, more responsive and ultimately a much more complete football sim. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 on the Xbox360 (being released as a souped up port of the PS2 version and as such having more detailed gameplay, in spite of superficial omissions such as edit mode or stadiums) is the last game to be released in this chain of evolution.
The next release in the series broke the chain and was developed for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, to take advantage of the new next generation technology to the s (PES6 on Xbox360 being largely a tweaked port of previous generation). However, it soon became apparent to the media and game playing public that something very big had been lost with this change. The New Pro Evolution Soccer series (unofficial title), spanning Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 to present, represents a much less enjoyable and less sophisticated football simulation experience and many fans the world over have chosen to think of PES6 as sadly the last game in a discontinued series.

Cities XL (formerly Cities Unlimited) is a city-building computer game developed by Monte Cristo, which has prior development experience in City Life. It was originally scheduled for release in the first quarter of 2009, but was eventually released on October 8, 2009.The game allowed players to play online and interact with others on massive persistent planets, and to work together by trading resources or building blueprints in order to satisfy the needs of city inhabitants. However, on March 8, 2010 the online service was closed and the game became single-player only.
Focus Home Interactive acquired the franchise in June 2011 and released Cities XL 2011 on October 14, 2010. The latest installment, Cities XL 2012, was announced in July 2011 and was released on October 20, 2011.

Massively multiplayer online

Cities XL allowed players an option to play on a persistent online virtual community known as a planet which required a monthly subscription fee. As a member of a planet, players were able to build their cities in a virtual world populated by other subscribers, trade resources such as electricity with other players, work together to create structures such as the Eiffel Tower, and visit other cities as an avatar and host events.
On January 27, 2010 Monte Cristo announced due to a low subscription rate they would be closing the multiplayer online service, and they did so on March 8, 2010. A patch was released on the same day allowing players to use buses in single-player mode, as they had previously only been available in multiplayer mode.

Zoning

The game offers the designation of three types of building lots: residential, commercial andindustrial, each of which can have a different density. Residential lots are furthermore distinguished by four social classes: unskilled workers, skilled workers, executives, and elites. Before designating building lots, players are required to select which class of residents may live there. The social class chosen for a lot will not be modified by the simulation.
To create building lots, players can zone an area of the map in which, upon confirmation, individual building lots will be created by the game. Players can also plop building lots individually. A Mass Placement Tool allowing players to select tags that define what categories of buildings they want to see created when outlining an area of lots has been announced in previews
Transport
Cities XL allows players to create a road network of a variety of road types, with it possible to draw roads at many different angles and curvatures. Bridges and tunnels are also part of the simulator. Other transport options that were planned to be included in the game weretrains, ferries and subways. An add-on introducing buses to the game was released in December 2009.

Gameplay Extension Modules

An unimplemented feature known as Gameplay Extension Modules (GEMs),also referred to as Game Enhancement Modules, were features, such as a ski resort or a beach, that would have been implemented into a city and managed in extra detail by the player. For example, in a ski resort GEM, it would have been possible to add ski lifts, restaurants, shelters, and ski-trails. It was planned that when a player was managing a GEM the main city simulation was stopped, but successful management of GEMs could help enhance a city.
