Jurassic Park: The Game

Jurassic Park: The Game is an episodic, downloadable third-person adventure video game developed by Telltale Games that is based on the Jurassic Park franchise. The game, which is the latest of several Universal/Telltale deals, was originally announced in June 2010 before being revealed in the February issue of Game Informer. The first episode was expected for release in April 2011,  but instead was pushed back to November 15  along with the original Console (PlayStation 3/Xbox 360) release, resulting in a multi-platform release with all 4 episodes at once.

Plot

Jurassic Park Episode 1: The Intruder

The game starts with Gerry Harding, the park's chief veterinarian, who is showing his daughter Jess around the park. At this time, Dennis Nedry puts his plan into motion to shut down the park and escape with the stolen dinosaur embryos. Later, his two contacts, Miles Chadwick and Nima Cruz, realize he's late to meet them at the boat to take them off the island. They head into the park and find Nedry's body. They manage to find the embryos as well, but are attacked by a pack of Dilophosaurus. Miles is killed, but the attacking dinosaurs flee before they can kill Nima. She retrieves the embryo canister and a handgun from Miles' body, but is then attacked and bitten by an unknown dinosaur, fleeing into the jungle.
Meanwhile, Gerry and Jess make their way to the port and come across Nima, who is now delirious from the bite and needs medical attention. The three of them begin driving back to the Visitor's Center, but are delayed by a juvenile Triceratops blocking the road. They manage to get the dinosaur back into its enclosure, but the alpha female appears and attacks, which also attracts the Tyrannosaurus. The trio barely manage to escape, hiding in a maintenance shed as the dinosaurs fight, and deciding to spend the night inside. The next morning, Dr. Laura Sorkin, a park scientist who became trapped in a field research lab due to the storm destroying the access road, sees Gerry, Jess and Nima on a security feed, and sends one of the automated tour vehicles to their location to pick them up. The three reach the Visitor's Center unaware that the surviving cast of the movie have just recently fled the island. Once inside, Gerry hears a radio trying to contact them. Locating it, he speaks with Dr. Sorkin, who helps cure Nima of her ailment. The T. rex attacks once again, forcing the trio to avoid it as best they can, eventually managing to lure it away with the help of the tour vehicle. The three regroup back inside the Visitor's Center, but when mention of a rescue is made, Nima pulls a gun on Gerry and Jess and tells them there won't be a rescue.

Jurassic Park  Episode 2: The Cavalry

Realizing there are still some people unaccounted for on the island, InGen hires a team of mercenaries to rescue them. The team consists Billy Yoder, Oscar Morales and Danny "D-Caf" Cafaro. They head to the Visitor's Center to meet with Bravo team, their backup unit, but when they try to radio, all they hear is gunfire. Arrving at the site, they find the team dead save for one member, Vargas, who has gone crazy and tries to attack them. After they subdue Vargas, Yoder and Oscar notice a strange wound on Vargas' arm, speculating that a poisonous animal bite caused him to hallucinate and kill his own men. As they examine the building's the security recordings hoping to find out what attacked Vargas, they run across footage of Nima marching Gerry and Jess out of the building at gunpoint. The Visitor's Center is once again attacked by dinosaurs, which kill Vargas as Oscar and Yoder rush back to the chopper. Meanwhile, Nima, Gerry and Jess are hiking through the woods when they stop to take a break. Gerry convinces Nima to let him start a fire by claiming the smoke will keep any wandering dinosaurs away, secretly hoping the rescue team will be able to see it. Later, while Gerry distracts Nima with questions about her family, Jess manages to steal the radio, slip away and contact Yoder, but is found out by Nima, who forces them to keep moving.
Yoder's team see the smoke from Gerry's fire, but a Pteranodon attacks their helicopter, forcing them to make an emergency landing. While D-Caf tries to repair the chopper, Yoder and Oscar head into the jungle to locate their targets. The pair split up to try and pick up a trail, but Yoder disturbs a nest of Dilophosaur eggs in the process, causing the mother to attack. He manages to hold the dino off long enough for Oscar to arrive and drive it away. Nima's group reaches a dead end at the side of a cliff, with an unfinished roller coaster the only way down. However, while riding it, a group of Herrerasaurus attack them. They manage to ward them off, but the coaster cars nearly ride off the tracks in the process. Yoder and Oscar locate them and disarm Nima, though she implies that she's met Oscar before. The group heads back to the helicopter, but find that D-Caf has disappeared. The T. rex reappears and makes its way towards them, forcing Oscar to fix the chopper himself. They manage to get into the air just in time.
The last target to be rescued is Dr. Sorkin, and they head out to the field lab to pick her up. En route, Nima gets into an argument with Oscar, clearly having history with him, but the fight is stopped once the group reaches the lab and meets with Dr. Sorkin. However, she refuses to leave with them, forcing Yoder to convince her by exploiting her desire for Isla Nublar to become a wildlife preserve for the dinosaurs. She finally concedes, but asks to be allowed to put an experimental cure for the dinosaurs' engineered lysine deficiency into the water supply to keep the group of Parasaurolophus she has been studying from dying off while she's away. As she, Gerry and Jess do this, Nima tries to hijack the helicopter and escape. Yoder and Oscar stop her, but in the scuffle, a thrown knife damages the controls. Meanwhile, Sorkin's group is attacked by a pack of Velociraptors, forcing them to take refuge atop the water tower. They spot the helicopter and call for help, only for the chopper to crash into the tower.

Jurassic Park  Episode 3: The Depths

Dr. Sorkin's group manage to escape the falling water tower, fleeing into the maintenance tunnels to escape the raptors. Nima, Yoder and Oscar survive the chopper crash, but all of the mercenaries' weapons are destroyed when the wreckage catches fire. Oscar takes off to scout the area, leaving Yoder to guard the unconscious Nima. When Oscar reaches the field lab, he sees the raptors managing to open to the door to the tunnels, and he follows them inside. Meanwhile, Yoder finds the embryo canister in Nima's backpack, and when she finally comes to, she is forced to make a deal with Yoder to split the profits from the embryo delivery. A Parasaur runs towards them, followed by the T. rex, forcing them to hide in the tunnels as well. Yoder drops the embryos in the process, and goes back out to get them, even while the T. rex still prowls the area. After retrieving the embryos, he and Nima proceed further into the tunnels, but Nima sees glowing eyes in the dark and refuses to continue on without a better light source than the red emergency lights. As Yoder tries to power up the main lights, Oscar tracks a raptor in another tunnel. He draws his knife and attacks the dinosaur, miraculously managing to kill it in single combat. Afterwards, Yoder and Nima find him and reveal their plan to sell the stolen embyros. Oscar, while hesitant, agrees to go along with it on the condition that he and Yoder complete their original mission to evacuate the other survivors.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sorkin reveals to Gerry that she actually put her lysine deficiency cure into the park's main water supply instead of just the holding pen's, which will eventually cure all the dinosaurs and eliminate Jurassic Park's lysine contingency entirely. As the two of them argue over the ethical implications of Dr. Sorkin's actions, Jess sneaks away with Sorkin's cigarettes, hoping to have a smoke. A raptor attacks her, forcing her to flee back to Gerry and Sorkin, leading the rest of the raptor pack right to them. They fight the dinosaurs off until the others arrive, with Oscar driving the raptors away by wounding the pack leader with his knife. Soon after, steam jets begin escaping from the nearby valves. Dr. Sorkin explains that this means that the park's power plant is on the verge of an explosion, and will have to be reset manually before it goes off. Now regrouped, the survivors head to the power plant to reset the main grid. The group work together to get inside the plant, release the built-up steam pressure and reset the system, but the raptors get in just before the plant's blast doors can sy close, trapping them inside with the dinosaurs. The group heads to the upper level to escape the raptors, but realize that the blast door controls on their level are burned out, meaning someone will have to go back down to the lower level and use the panel there. Oscar volunteers, and manages to hold off the raptors but, just when Oscar is about to reset the grid the raptor pack leader attacks Oscar seeking revenge. Just as Oscar is about to die he resets the grid. The rest of the group runs into the boiler room and seal themselves in. However, once inside they find the body of a man covered in what look like a nest. Yoder identifies him as D-Caf, alive but brain-dead from the same poison that affected Nima and Vargas, with dinosaur eggs laid in his abdomen. Sorkin reveals that the dinosaurs responsible were Troodon, explaining she had been ordered to destroy them after their poisonous bite had been discovered, but couldn't bring herself to do it, keeping them alive in the quarantine pens for study instead. Angered by Dr. Sorkin's actions, Yoder grabs her and draws his knife, threatening to kill her.

Jurassic Park  Episode 4: The Survivors

As Gerry manages to convince Yoder to let Dr. Sorkin live, Jess discovers a grate leading back into the maintenance tunnels. As they try to open the grate, the Troodon pack returns to their nest and attacks. Yoder holds them back as the group gets the grate open. They run through the tunnels with the Troodon on their heels, but end up getting separated. Gerry and Nima manage to find a ladder and make their way to the surface, but everyone else remains trapped in the tunnels. Gerry tries to go back for Jess and the others, but Nima convinces him they can take care of themselves. During the small break, the two strike up a conversation, with Nima revealing that Isla Nubar was actually the ancestral home of her tribe before InGen brought it out, forcibly removed the native villagers, and built Jurassic Park. She explains that Oscar was one of the InGen mercenaries who originally evicted her people from the island, and she took the job of stealing the embryos for revenge, as well as the hope that the money would help her provide a better life for her daughter. A passing tour car gets their attention, and they use it to head for the park's marine exhibit, which they conclude is the others' most likely destination.
The two groups reunite at the marine exibit, where Yoder explains that they all need to get off the island soon, as the U.S. Navy intends to bomb the island on InGen's behalf to eliminate the threat of potential escaped dinosaurs. Upon hearing this, Dr. Sorkin abandons the group and takes an elevator down to the underwater aquarium, leaving the others stranded topside. The others manage to unlock the elevator and follow her down, where they overhear her on the phone arguing with InGen over the impending bombing, attempting to use the other survivors as hostages to get it called off. When that doesn't seem to work, she releases the park's captive Tylosaurus into the lagoon, despite Gerry's pleading. The newly freed Tylosaur slams into the side of the facility, knocking Dr. Sorkin into the moon pool and devouring her. Yoder calls his employers and has them delay the bombing, but as the group makes their way back to the elevator he pulls out a grenade he took from D-Caf's body, explaining that with his men dead, he only cares about delivering the embryos, and doesn't want the Hardings slowing him down. He offers to take Nima along, but Nima, disgusted by Yoder's betrayal, refuses. Yoder throws the grenade as he escapes to the surface, which cracks the facility's windows when it goes off, causing water to seep in. As the elevator ascends, however, he realizes that the embryos are gone, stolen by Jess while he wasn't looking.
Jurassic Park: The Game (XBOX360)
Gerry and the others manage to seal themselves in the aquarium's control room before the rotunda above floods completely, only to find that the damaged pressure seal on the door is causing the moon pool to slowly flood their room as well. Nima notices that the only way out is through a sea cave in the wall of the lagoon, which she remembers from her childhood, that will take them directly to the surface. Donning scuba gear, the three make their through the water and into the cave, narrowly avoiding the hungry Tylosaur in the process. They eventually reach the surface and head for the docks, where Nima's contacts left a boat waiting after Nedry's failed delivery, but are attacked by Yoder as soon as they arrive. As Nima and Yoder fight, the T. rex arrives, and they all freeze in place to keep the dinosaur from seeing them. Gerry kicks the embryo can to distract the T. rex, but Yoder rushes for it, giving himself away and getting himself eaten. Nima manages to grab the embryos as the three remaining survivors run for the boat. Gerry distracts the T. rex so the others can escape, but the T. rex damages the skywalk Nima and Jess are on. As Jess clings to the railing, the embryos fall to the ground below.
It's here the player is allowed to chose whether Nima goes to save Jess or the embryos. If she goes to save the embryos, Nima is eaten by the T. rex while Gerry and Jess escape the island on a boat, with the former deciding to return to his old job as a regular zoo veterinarian so he can be closer to Jess. He also mentions of taking care of Nima's daughter as well.
If the player decides that Nima should save Jess however, she pulls her up while the embryos are crushed under the T. rex's foot. Gerry, Jess and Nima escape the island together. As they sail off, Nima worries how she will take care of her daughter without the money the embryos would have brought her, but Jess manages to find a large bag of money in the boat, presumably the remainder of Nedry's payment for the embryos, implying that everything will work out in the end.
Jurassic Park: The Game (XBOX360)

Development

The game was originally announced on June 8, 2010 along with Back to the Future: The Game. However, Back to the Future was released first, on December 22, 2010.
On January 14, 2011, in an exclusive article for Game Informer, Jurassic Park: The Game was officially unveiled. The game is set to have an original plot that takes place both concurrently and after the plot of the original Jurassic Park film and is set to resolve some loose ends of the film, such as the fate of Dennis Nedry's shaving-cream can and the embryos contained within. It was also announced that there will be new characters such as Dr. Gerry Harding - who appeared briefly in the movie - will make an appearance and that the characters from the original film will only be referenced.
There are also returning dinosaurs, which are the TyrannosaurusVelociraptorDilophosaurusParasaurolophus, and Triceratops, as well as a new, nocturnal dinosaur with glowing eyes, confirmed to be Troodon, and a Tylosaurus (mosasaur) that will be seen in Jurassic Park's marine facility. The game will also include dinosaurs, such as HerrerasaurusCompsognathus, and Pteranodon that were known or speculated to have been in the park but were never shown.
It has been stated that the game will not be a shooter and instead focus more on its characters. The developers have described it as being similar to Heavy Rain. It will also have decision-based objectives as well as quick-time events that affect gameplay as well as how the game's events play out, making it the first game by Telltale in which the player can be killed.

Controversy

It was reported by 1UP.com that the development staff wrote favourable user reviews for the game on Metacritic without disclosing their affiliation to the game. Ratings on Metacritic reflected the development staff's view with a score of 10/10. Once users got a hold of this the ratings plummeted down to 3.1/10 as of the 19 November.

Release

In a reveal trailer released February 2011, Jurassic Park: The Game was confirmed for April 2011. Console release was confirmed for Fall 2011. A pre-order for the game is entitled to all 5 episodes delivered monthly, a collector's DVD at the end of the season, and special forums access to behind the scenes features/content (production art, game designer chats, etc.). On April 25, 2011, Telltale Games announced that the PC/Mac version would be delayed until Fall, resulting in a multi-platform release. All pre-orders up until April 24 will be refunded and a free game voucher was offered as compensation good for any Telltale game ever and in the future. The game is now to be released on PC and consoles November 15. The game is up for pre-orders again, only this time, those who pre-ordered for the Xbox 360 version will get a pet avatar T-Rex, while PC and Mac players who pre-ordered those versions will get the deluxe edition of the game.

Reception

Jurassic Park The Game has been met with mixed reviews currently holding scores of 60% for the Xbox 360 version, 55% for the PS3 and 55% for the PC version from Metacritic.
IGN said of the game, "Jurassic Park is a meandering tale of forgettable characters getting lost in a park that is far less wondrous than the one we saw on the silver screen", giving it a 5.5 out of 10.
N00bAlert was decidedly more favorable assigning it a score of 7 out of 10 when reviewing the game saying, "...when you approach Jurassic Park more like an interactive movie than a modern game, it really is a lot of fun."
However, Richard Cobbett of PC Gamer UK gave the game an unfavorable review placing it 41 out of a hundred, calling the game "a barely interactive movie that asks nothing of you but the most basic of motor functions," taking issue with the gameplay taking a back seat to the plot, which he described as "a hammy but watchable sequel to the first movie."

Platforms

Episodes for Microsoft Windows and OS X will be released as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions simultaneously. However, the Xbox 360 will get a retail disc release, as opposed to the episodic release of the other platforms.

Plot summary

All versions besides Android and IOS
A plane, carrying Tintin, a young journalist from Brussels, Captain Haddock, a sea captain and Tintin's dog Snowy, is hit by lightning and crash lands in a desert, knocking Tintin, Snowy and Haddock unconscious.
The previous day, Tintin and Snowy were looking around a market. Tintin purchases a model ship, which another man tries to purchase from him, but fails. The man who sold it to him brings him to a friend of his who is a ship expert, who tells Tintin that the ship is called "The Unicorn", a triple masted, double-decked ship with fifty guns, and that it belonged to Sir Francis Haddock. The ship expert gives Tintin a book. Tintin learns that the ship (which was a part of Charles II's fleet) was on its way from Barbados to Europe when it was attacked by Red Rackham and his men, so Sir Francis blew his ship up and fled. Tintin then takes it to a back alley to examine it. He finds a scroll hidden in it, containing a strange poem about three ships. Suddenly, he is attacked by some men, who steal his ship. Tintin gives the scroll to Snowy. Snowy sniffs one of the men's hats, and leads Tintin to Marlinspike Hall. There, he meets the man who had attempted to get the boat in the market, one of the Bird Brothers. The Bird brothers chase after Tintin, attempting to get the scroll, but they are knocked unconscious by a man named Allan and his men. Allan knock Tintin unconscious as well.
Tintin then wakes up on a ship called the Karaboudjan, but is freed by Snowy who returns the scroll to Tintin. Realising that Allan has stolen the Bird Brothers' scroll, Tintin goes to find him. Tintin inadvertently climbs into the cabin of a man. Tintin realises that he was the original captain of the ship. The man gives Tintin directions on how to find Allan, telling him to go to the bridge. Tintin does so, and confronts Allan there. Allan reveals that the man is a Haddock and is the ancestor of Sir Francis Haddock. Tintin and Allan then fight with banana peels and fireworks. Tintin manages to win the fight and gets the scroll Allan stole from his wallet, as well as a picture of him. Tintin and Snowy rush back to the Captain Haddock's cabin and shows Haddock the scroll, asking Haddock to tell him more about Sir Francis Haddock. Haddock agrees and tells him more about Sir Francis Haddock's story.
The Unicorn was an enormous galleon that transported goods from various places to Europe. On the trip in which it was attacked by Red Rackham, it was carrying thousand and thousands of gold, coins, diamonds and other precious treasures. Red Rackham and his men had attacked the Unicorn because they wanted the treasures on the Unicorn.
As Haddock re-enacts the sword fights Sir Francis Haddock had gone through during the attack, he destroys some electric cables, setting fire to the room they're in, which is located in the lower part of the ship, thereby causing the ship to sink. Tintin and Snowy manage to escape and climb onto an escape-seaplane which fell from the ship onto the sea. Haddock also survives and climbs aboard the plane too, regretting his actions and repeating of his ancestor's mistakes, telling Tintin how Sir Francis Haddock blew up the ship and escaped in a boat, sacrificing his crew. The rest of the crew also survives. They board the plane and escape.
The game then picks up where the first scene left off, as Tintin, Haddock and Snowy wake up in the desert at the scene of the plane crash. Two men approach them in a motorcycle with a side car. They are revealed to be Allan's men, and plan to bring them back to the fictional city of Baghar to meet with Allan's "boss". However, Haddock knocks them unconscious and he, Tintin and Snowy steal their motorcycle and head to Baghar to continue their quest to stop Allan. In Bagghar, the two begin asking people, until they find out that Omar Ben Salaad has the third Unicorn. After getting in to Ben Salaad's palace, they meet Bianca Castafiore, who is staging a concert on the palace. Tintin later fight Salaad's henchmens after it ben revealed that Salaad wants to take the third scroll and the one known as Allan's "boss". After a fight with Allan,Tintin later get the third scroll and take off to Brittany,Sir Francis Haddock's hideout. Learning that in the scroll is written the coordinates of the treasure of Red Rackham,Tintin and Haddock planning to go to the coordinated location, but Haddock is kidnapped by Allan and use him as hostage to get the scrolls. After rescuing the Captain,Tintin finds out that the treasure is in Marlinspike Hall. There they get the treasure and the Thompsons came to arrests Allan and his friends.
Android and IOS version
Tintin, a young journalist, purchases a model ship from a stall. Another man comes and attempts to buy the ship from Tintin, but fails. The stall owner tells Tintin the man's name is Sakharine, and that he has come to market for a few weeks to buy antiquities. Tintin also meets Thompson and Thomson, who are trying to catch a pick-pocket. Tintin's model ship is stolen from him shortly afterwards. Tintin and his dog Snowy decide to go to Sakharine's home, Marlinspike Hall, to investigate. Tintin finds his stolen model ship, but realises that it's different from his. On the way home, Tintin is kidnapped and taken aboard the Karaboudjan, a steam ship heading for the fictional Baghar, a city located in North Africa. Tintin escapes from his cell and tries to escape the boat. On the way he meets Captain Haddock, the original captain of the ship, who had been imprisoned by Sakharine in his cabin. Sakharine had taken over the ship and bribed Haddock's crew into working with him. Haddock helps Tintin and Snowy escape, but as they are at sea in a life boat, they are attacked by a sea-plane sent by Sakharine, but Tintin is able to damage the plane. Tintin and Haddock hold the pilot captive and fly away, but crash-land in the desert after the plane is struck by lightning. Snowy finds a map and some water for Haddock and Tintin so that they can continue their journey. As they walk, Haddock tells Tintin about his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock, who been the captain of the Unicorn, but had been attacked by Red Racham, who wanted Haddock's treasure. Haddock decided to blow up the ship and escaped in a life-boat. Before he could do so, Red Rackham and they fought with their swords. Francis won the fight and blew up the ship and escaped in a life boat.
Tintin and Haddock eventually fall unconscious because of lack of water and the heat. Tintin wakes up to find himself in Fort Salaad, an outpost a few days away from Baghar. There he meets Liteunant Hank Morris, who tells Tintin that Haddock, who had been angry and violent, is currently in the barracks unconscious. Tintin asks Hank permission to use the telegraph, but Hank tells him that the forts radio is broken and instructs him how to fix the radio antennas. Tintin does so and sends a message before joing some soldiers on a caravan to Baghar with Haddock and Snowy.
There, Sakharine has joined an opera held by a rich man named Ben Salaad who has the third miniature ship, which is hidden in his opera house. The Thom(p)sons prepare the arrest outside the opera house while Tintin and Haddock sneak into it. Tintin makes it to the walkways under ceiling and finds that one of Haddock's old crewmen have gotten the miniature ship. Haddock screws the plan up after revealing himself to Sakharine and challenging him to a fight. As they fight across the stage, Tintin defeats Allan an his crew, and jumps off the walkway down onto the stage to help Haddock, and luckily survives after landing on a prop. Snowy pursues Sakharine's pet crow and holds on to its feet, getting the miniature ship in the process. Snowy accidentally lets go of the crow, the ship and Snowy falling to the stage. Tintin catches Snowy but the miniature ship falls in front of Sakharine. Before opening it, Sakharine attempts to kill Tintin, but Haddock hits him hardly in the head, knocking him unconscious. Tintin, Haddock Snowy all receive strong applause from the audience.
After hearing Tintin, Haddock and Snowy's story, Salaad gives them the ship and the scroll, telling them that they can take it with them to find the treasure, giving Tintin and Haddock an excuse for another adventure.

Gameplay

The game is a platformer. The player mainly controls Tintin, but can also control Snowy sometimes and in the final battle with Allan, the player controls Captain Haddock. Snowy has the ability to follow the scent of Tintin, rats and other humans and creatures, and can also scare harmful creatures away with a bark. Tintin can punch enemies and climb ladders, and can also pilot planes and motorcycles.

1UP.com describe the game as "a frontrunner for Worst Game of 2011".

The game also contains content exclusive to the PlayStation 3 version. The game was well received by critics and was a top-seller in the UK.

Plot

Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Wii and Mac OSX Version
The game focuses on the adventures of the toys of a boy named Andy: a sheriff cowboy doll named Woody, a cowgirl doll called Jessie, a stuffed horse called Bullseye, a toy space ranger called Buzz Lightyear (Buzz for short), Hamm the Piggy Bank, Rex the toy T-Rex (Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head are excluded from the game) and Slinky the dog. The game starts as Woody stares out at a passing train. He realizes it is s of tied-up orphans and goes to rescue them. As he jumps on Bullseye, he encounters the Evil Dr, Pork Chop (who is actually Hamm). After a chase after the train, Woody has to save the orphans, in the same time trying to defeat Dr. Pork Chop. As Woody makes his way to the head of the train, he rescues the orphans, giving them to Buzz. He then defeats Dr. Porkchop by damaging his flying saucer. It is revealed it is just a story Hamm is telling the toys of the toys' new owner, a girl called Bonnie. Hamm then continues the story, with the assistance of Slinky and Rex.
Years later, Andy is off to college, and they decide to have one last shot to have him play with them, and plan to attract him using the house's phones. They send Rex to the basement to the home phone to make a call to Andy's cellphone, while they go get the cell phone itself. However, after they finish getting Andy's cell phone, Rex does not call the cell phone, so they go to the basement themselves. Using Sarge's toy soldiers, they get the phone down, and tell Sarge and his men to bring the phone back to Andy's room while they go find Rex, who was busy playing a Buzz Lightyear video game(which appears in the opening scene of Toy Story 2). The plan fails, so they go to Sunnyside Daycare, where they are greeted by a teddy bear called Lot'so Huggin Bear (or Lotso), who has prepared a "Welcome New Toys" carnival in honor of their arrival, giving them fun games to play. Woody still thinks he should be with Andy, and escapes from Sunnyside, but ends up at Bonnie's house, where Bonnie plays with him along with her other toys, making up a story of how a witch destroys the house. Woody dodges the witches attacks. The witch destroys the house, but Woody finds a spaceship which they can escape in, and after powering it up with batteries, he escapes with the toys.
Meanwhile, back at Sunnyside, Lotso's bad side is revealed, and he locks the toys up in high security cells, with patrolling trucks and spotlights guarding them. Woody returns to the rescue, and with the help of the advice given by a toy phone, he manages to free the toys and escape.
The toys end up in a garbage truck and are sent to the dump. Buzz, Jessie, Woody end up on a conveyor belt heading toward a shredder. Jessie and Woody escape the conveyor belt and manage to stop it while Buzz (who was programmed back to normal) saves the three squeeze toy aliens. They find that the other toys are stuck on a piece of trash on a conveyor belt headed for the incinerator. They team up to stop the conveyor belt. Buzz stops the machine by throwing a cube of trash into the machine, causing an explosion, stopping the conveyor belt, and instead of going to Andy's they go to stay at Bonnie's place.
PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable Version
Rex looks back at the toy's past encounters with the help of his drawings, and tells the story of the film.
Andy is going to college, and hasn't played with the toys in years, so the toys decide to get his attention using the Andy's mobile phones. However, the plan fails, and Andy merely takes the phone from Rex's hand and closes the toy box. Andy's mother tells Andy to start packing for college. Andy decides to bring Woody to college and puts the other toys in a trash bag, and plans to put them in the attic. But before Andy can, his mother puts the bag on the curve, mistaking it for trash. The toys escape the bag thanks to Rex's tail and go to the garage to hide. Buzz decides to go to Sunnyside Daycare with the toys so they can be played with once again. Woody rushes down to tell the toys about the mistake, but Andy's mom comes and drives them to the daycare center.
Woody decides to go back to Andy, but gets stuck in a tree in the process and is brought home by a girl named Bonnie. Meanwhile, the other toys meet a friendly strawberry scented bear named Lotso, who places them in the caterpillar room. The toys realize that the kids in the caterpillar room are too young to play toys and the kids damage the toys. Buzz decides to go ask Lotso for a transfer to the Butterfly room, but Lotso refuses and switches Buzz to demo mode, making Buzz think he's a real Space Ranger again and locks his friends up for being minions of Zurg. Woody learns of this from Chuckles, one of Bonnie's toys and returns to Sunnyside and helps the toys escape, but they end up in a garbage truck going to the dump.
In the dump, they nearly fall into the incinerator, but are saved by the squeeze toy aliens, who use a crane to save them. The toys decide to return to Andy's home using a garbage truck, but Buzz falls out and ends up on top of a car several trucks, car and motor-bikes away from the garbage truck, but manages to join the gang after jumping through vehicles to the truck.
Back home, Woody decides that they should go to Bonnie's place and changes the words on the toys' box. Andy reluctantly gives the toys to Bonnie.
As Rex looks as his pictures, Jessie's tells them that Bonnie is home. Rex happily leaves, preparing for playtime.

Development

Toy Story 3 was first announced at E3 in 2010, along with the app for the iPhone and iPod touch that lets fans play, personalize and stay connected to Toy Story. Disney Interactive later announced the Exclusive Content for the PS3 version on the game's release, including the ability to play as Emperor Zurg or unlock additional mini-games designed specifically for PlayStation Move motion controller.
According to an interview with the developers of the game, the developers wanted to give Pixar choices rather than dictate play, so they offered two pitches when they went to the studio with ideas in 2008. The first was a more traditional treatment of a movie licence game, where the player retells the film and hit the big beats of the story. The second pitch was this free-form mode which they called the Toy Box mode. Pixar loved the ideas and suggested that they develop both.

Reception

Critical Response

Toy Story 3 has received generally positive reviews. IGN scored the PS3 and Xbox 360 version an 8.0, while scoring the Wii version a 7.5.GameSpot gave 7.0 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 version. The Official Nintendo Magazine scored the Wii and DS versions 80% saying that it was one of its kind but had horrendous voice acting which contrasts with IGN's review, who said the voice acting was "superb". Nintendo Power gave the Wii version a 7.5, calling it "surprisingly fun", while Game Informer had given the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions an 8, and the Wii version a 6/10, being the game's lowest score. Game Informer criticized the Wii version for its graphical downstep and "neutered Toy Box mode" (vs. PS3 and Xbox 360 version) where in this version "the missions are too repetitive, customization is barren, and its only 1-player, leaving in its place an eternal slog of fetching items."

Gameplay

Two sims interacting withThe Sims 3: Pets (PC) each other

The Sims 3 is built upon the same concept as its predecessors. Players control their own Sims in activities and relationships in a similar manner to real life. The game play is open-ended and indefinite. Sim houses and neighborhoods are entirely in one continuous map. The developers stated, "What you do outside your home now matters as much as what you do within." One of the biggest changes to the franchise is the use of rabbit-holes. Your sim isn't allowed to go inside the majority of city buildings; instead, they simply disappear inside for a certain amount of time--a feature known in video games as a rabbit-hole--while you are given very basic choices on what happens insidThe Sims 3: Pets (PC)
e without actually seeing it. This was a rather large step backwards for The Sims franchise, as the previous installments had many fun and exciting locales in which your sims could cavort. For example, instead of walking your sim and her date inside a restaurant and watching the waiter serve them dinner as they nuzzle each other at the table, as you could in The Sims 2, you now wait outside while getting little text alerts about your sim's activities. This lack of interaction with the city has led many critics to wonder why such emphasis was put on walking around town when there's hardly anything for your sim to really do.
The Sims 2 used a reward system called Wants and Fears. This is replaced with a new system called Wishes in The Sims 3. Fulfilling a Sim's wish contributes to the Sim's Lifetime Happiness score and mood. Some wishes, such as "Go to the Park", may add little points to their lifetime happiness while "Have A Baby Boy" may add thousands of points. In The Sims 2, Wants and Fears also contributed to a Sim's "Aspiration" meter, roughly analogous to current self-esteem. In The Sims 3, Aspiration is removed entirely, replaced with "Moodlets", which contribute positive or negative values to the original Motivation meter. Moodlets can be inspired by physical events, such as having a good meal or comfort from sitting in a good chair, as well as emotional events like a first kiss or a break-up. Most moodlets last for a set duration, but some negative Moodlets can be cured (such as the one incurred by an urgent need to urinate) and some positive ones rely on the Sim's surroundings and traits.
The game includes an optional feature called "Story Progression," which allows all Sims in the neighborhood to autonomously continue as if the player were controlling them, such as grow up, get married, get jobs and promotions, have children, build or buy their dream house while the player isn't playing. Sims live for a set duration of time (adjustable by the player) and advance through several stages (baby, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder). Sims can die of old age or they can die prematurely from causes such as fire, starvation, drowning, electrocution, (as of the World Adventures expansion pack) The Mummy's curse, (as of the Ambitions expansion pack) a meteor, and (as of the Late Night expansion pack) by thirst (vampires only). One of the major new additions to gameplay is Opportunities, tasks that Sims can complete to earn rewards. These challenges occur randomly based on aspects of each Sim's lifestyle, such as relationships, skills and job. Career opportunities such as working overtime or completing special tasks can yield a pay raise, cash bonus, or relationship boost. Skill opportunities are requests by neighbors or community members for Sims to solve problems using their acquired skills for cash or relationship rewards. If the opportunity is connected to a Sim's school, the reward may be increased school performance

The Sims 3: Pets

The Sims 3: Pets is the fifth expansion pack for The Sims 3 on PC and Mac, and is the second console game in the series. It was released on October 18, 2011 in North America.

Development

On June 3, 2011, EA confirmed the rumors with a press release and a game trailer which was released on their Official YouTube Channel. The Sims 3: Pets expansion pack is focused around adding animals to the game. The player creates their pet in a similar fashion to the 'Create A Sim' feature. The 'Create A Pet' feature allows the player to customise their pets in various ways, including selecting a breed and a set of traits for their pets.

Unlike in Sims 2: Pets and The Sims: Unleashed, the player can directly control pets. Pets, unlike sims, do not have jobs or a 'lifetime wish'. Included in the expansion pack is a new town 'Apaloosa Plains'. The limited edition of The Sims 3 Pets, which must be pre-ordered, includes a pet shop which will not be included in the normal edition of the game. It has also been proven in a patch for the game that the new creature will be a unicorn unless changed.

On June 8, 2011, Ben Bell gave a presentation and demonstration previewing Pets that was streamed over EA's website. He also answered questions regarding the Expansion Pack. The demonstration contained parts of the game that had never been seen before by the public. The event took place on Wednesday June 8, 2011 at 17:00 UTC. In their E3 hands-on preview with the Pet Creator Tool, GameMarshal was able to uncover that your pets can mate and produce off-spring, although no cross-species breeding is allowed, genetics would be passed down to pet offspring, and you'll be able to assign unique characteristics to your pets.

Gameplay

In Pets, there is a new town, called Appaloosa Plains. The new town comes with every building in the base game, as well as new stores and shops. In the Limited Edition, the town also comes with a pet store. The expansion comes with new rabbit holes, as well as old rabbit holes with new designs. Every pet will have its own special needs. Sims can also play with laser pointers for playing with cats. Unicorns, if found, in the game are magical and can be added to a sim's household. They can set things on fire, teleport, curse or bless sims. They can breed with both unicorns and horses. Sims up into their teenage years can ride with horses. Dogs can swim in swimming pools, but they can not drown, as pets can only die by old age. A user can have up to 6 pets in one household. This also extends the maximum amount of sims in a household from 8 to 10.

There are new professions for sims such as "Horse Handler". Pets also comes with wildlife, but they cannot be added to households. There are also ways for sims to interact with their pets. Players can use their horses as a form of transportation. Sims can adopt and bathe pets. They can also have dogs and cats go around town and sniff for collectables. These collectables can be sold or stored in terrariums. Pets can learn skills. Cats and dogs can learn to hunt, dogs can learn to locate collectibles, and horses can learn racing and jumping. There are over a hundred breeds of dogs and cats. Players may have a poodle with short hair, or you may also have a Poodle with Dalmatian spots.Pets can meet, fall in love and reproduce. They can try to have puppies, kittens, or foals, and will also have family trees. Players can adopt horses and train them to run in races. The PC version will be bundled in a package with the base game as The Sims 3 Plus Pets.

Pets

There are four pets which can be created in Pets - dogs, cats, horses, and unicorns!

Create a Pet

A player editing a dog in Create a Pet in console.

In Pets, players are able to create, customize and control over a hundred different kinds of cats and dogs and can breed and share them with friends. Create a Pet and Create a Sim are all in one mode, with different dressing room backgrounds. Players can customize the pet’s coat, shape, pattern, and color. They can change the ears, tail, snout, eyes, and much more. Pets allows players to go even further than customizing their pet’s look. A pet's behavior patterns and traits are also sy customizable. There is also an Advanced Mode for the Create a Pet mode. In it, users can put different layers on the body of their pets, such as dots and/or stripes. Pets have the same age sliders that were introduced with Generations. There is no height slider for pets, due to animation conflicts in the game. Players not only get to choose the dominant pattern but they also get to pick an accessory pattern and both can be colored. In horses, the mane and tail color are independent of the main color of the horse. Players can also add colorful markings on their fur and slide them around on their Sims' pets bodies.Markings are also in layers and can be placed in any order.

Dogs

Dogs can be obtained when created with the household, or can be adopted by computer or cell phone after the household has already been created. Sims who are giving them away will also put an advertisement in the newspaper. Sims will occasionally encounter stray dogs. These dogs can be befriended and adopted by the player. Most popular dog breeds are offered in the game. Breed has nothing to do within gameplay except the appearance of offspring. The reinforcement social system is used to correct bad behaviors and to praise good ones. Getting by with no punishment for bad behavior can lead a dog to take on that trait. Both dogs and cats can obtain fleas while outdoors. These make them very uncomfortable, and they can pass them to other pets and sims. When grown up, adult dogs can learn tricks, guard the house, and hunt for objects. They can be taught six tricks: sit, sit up, play dead, roll over, speak, and shake. Dogs can also be taught to hunt. They cannot learn on their own, but if taught, they can sniff out gems, metals and bones.

Cats

As with dogs, cats can be either created with the household or adopted later on in the game. The breed of cats does not matter in gameplay, although many popular breeds are also offered. Scolding and praising a cat will influence the traits it will develop. Like dogs, cats can also hunt. Cats can learn how to hunt using a toy from the animal toy box, unlike dogs, they cannot be taught to hunt by their owners. Cats can hunt small pets. Unlike dogs, they cannot sniff out gems, stones, or metals. They also have the ability to fish.

Horses

Horses can be created with the household, adopted using a computer or telephone, or bought from the Equestrian Center. Horses usually die of old age, but fires and meteors can kill them as well. The Jockey is the sole horse related Lifetime Wish in the Pets expansion. To accomplish it, the player will need to max the riding skill as well as earn 40,000 simoleons from your horses (racing, sales, stud services, etc). Horse breeds do not affect sale price. Horses can learn two skills - racing and jumping. Wild horses appear in herds (usually of two or three, depending on neighborhood size) in home neighborhoods, but not in exotic destinations such as Champs Les Sims. Wild horses can be befriended. It's easier to befriend them if the Sim has a high (hidden) Wildlife skill. Horses are the first non-"human" Sims to have their own occult status, appearing also as unicorns. Horses and unicorns can breed together, with a chance of the offspring also being a unicorn. Unlike cats or dogs in the game, horses can be sold. The higher the horse's skills and the more money they have earned racing means a larger amount of money they can be sold for. Elderly horses can be sold. Horses can ONLY be found in the PC/Mac version of the Pets Expansion Pack.

Appaloosa Plains

Downtown Appaloosa Plains showing mainly the Crestview School and Stadium and the Appaloosa Plains Civic Center.

Appaloosa Plains is the name of the new town in The Sims 3: Pets. It is set to be a ranch style town with new farm and barn style items in Build and Buy mode. The new location is set in a beautiful Midwestern ranching town nestled between lush green hills, where players can let their dogs and cats run loose in the park or spend time riding horses at the equestrian center. Players will be able to build their own stable on residential lots. There are new versions of the grocery store, hospital, theater, bistro, stadium, school, spa, equestrian center, cat jungle gym, and parks. There is also a small Dive Bar, however it requires the Late Night expansion pack. Appaloosa Plains was a cowboy ranch town in the Midwest, on the edge of the highway, and is named after the Appaloosa breed of horse. On the edge of the town can be found a dinosaur skeleton where dogs can collect bones and search for treasure.

At one point Appaloosa Plains was a sleepy ranching township, its only claim to fame being a garish tourist trap that drew in the occasional passerby. However, a recent influx of city slickers has turned the area into a bustling hub of activity. They keep arriving with their stacks of Simoleons, retrofitting the town with modern amenities while eagerly believing they've acquired their own slice of country paradise. The clash between the old and new is readily apparent, with some elderly die-hards clinging to the remaining vestiges of life as they knew it. Will the town come together in the new era of prosperity, or will the generational clash leave a clear line drawn in the sand?

Pet Traits

As with Sims, players are able to choose traits for their pets. However, unlike regular Sims, a player can only select up to 3. Sims can train their pet behaviors through the pet doing related action to the trait or praising/scolding them. If the pet has been trained well enough they can develop a "trained" trait. The difference between the usual pet trait is a highlighted green box around the trait icon. Trained traits can be lost if a Sim trains their pet the opposite behaviors. It is possible for a pet to have more than 5 traits. Since Horses are not featured in the console version, all pet traits that are exclusive for horses will not be available on the console version. Pets created in Create a Pet can have up to 3 traits. If the player buys the Attitude Adjustment Lifetime reward they can add 2 more traits, in which the total number of traits is 5. If a pet with more than 5 traits moves to another world, they will lose all their "trained" traits. Only the first 5 traits on the pet's bio list will still remain.

Reception

Upon release in North America, The PC and Mac versions of The Sims 3: Pets got positive reviews, with IGN rating the game 7.5/10. The console version (360,PS3), also getting a similar score, with IGN giving it a rating of 7/10.

There has also been some issues regarding user-created mods that stopped working properly on the expansion pack. This has been attributed to the developers switching to an in-house animation engine from the proprietary Granny 3D toolkit that they used in the earlier versions of The Sims 3. There are also some problems regarding glitches in the game. Some reported are, problems creating a pet, problems involving graphics, and crashing.
